 P | ACRYLICS | SOUND FIX \n \n Peter Ustinov once said\, &ldquo\
;Love is an act of endless forgiveness\, a tender look which becomes a h
abit.&rdquo\; Love isn&rsquo\;t easy\, and the films included in Romance
Shorts: Endless Forgiveness display the many varied sacrifices we make
to be with the people we love and lust after. \n \n Every year Roofto
p Films puts together a program of short films about sex and romance\, b
ut unlike the so-called romantic films at the multiplexes\, the films th
at we show don&rsquo\;t reinforce stereotypes and reassure audiences. Th
ese films remind us that love is confusing\, terrifying and rife with da
nger&mdash\;and that courtship wouldn&rsquo\;t be nearly so exciting if
it were otherwise. And for it all to work out we have to forgive our bel
oved a thousand tiny indiscretions and imperfections. \n \n When we
are young\, sex can seem baffling but magical (The Kinda Sutra)\, but on
ce we have basically mastered the mechanics of it\, we still might push
things too far (Young Love)&mdash\;and even if we can come to agree abou
t what we want\, that doesn&rsquo\;t mean that it is going to work out q
uite as well as we planned (Receive Bacon). Those early\, lustful moment
s are exhilarating\, but soon enough we realize that for relationships t
o continue we might have to give up everything we have previously valued
most (Sweet Dreams) or reassess our understanding of what it means to l
ove someone in the first place (Sister Wife). \n \nBut in the end\, h
opefully\, it is worth it. And when we look back and remember how much w
e have sacrificed for the ones we treasure (2 Birds)\, we&rsquo\;ll hope
fully remember the pain and anxiety and realize that we couldn&rsquo\;t
have experienced true love any other way. \n \n The evening is presente
d by Babeland. Look out for chances to win a VIP Babeland gift bag (va
lued at $200) and stop by the Babeland table for coupons\, tips &amp\; t
ricks and more. Free toys will be handed out to the first 50 people! \n

. \n \n MAP | SOUND FIX \n \n There is no denying the simpl
e pleasure provided by a film that captures some bizarre and extreme phe
nomenon from some distant corner of the world\, and Rooftop’s Dangerous
Docs program brings together 6 such gems. Teenagers in Soweto dance atop
moving trains\, Australian preservationists rescue bizarre endangered c
hickens\, a sideshow performer turns amputation into a spectator sport\,
and men travel from all across the world to compete in the World Beard
 and Mustache Championships. \n \nOf course\, a good non-fiction film
does more than merely document a spectacle\, and each of these films als
o delves into the motivations of the subjects. We find out how an Africa
n teenager justifies risking his life for a fleeting moment of local fam
e\; we hear about the exhilaration the artist feels as he turns his own
body into a shredded canvas\; we witness the love one troubled man feels
for a flock of squawking birds\; we get a glimpse of the quirky vanity
that drives someone to grow a mustache that protrudes 16 inches off the
side of his face. \n \n \nEven after all this\, it’s not likely that we
will all be able to fully relate to these individuals—they often make de
cisions that most of us would never even consider. But we do\, hopefully
\, come to understand some of the forces that drive them to such extreme
s of behavior. And\, whatever their motivations\, it is certainly fun to
watch. \n \n Rooftop Films is a non-profit organization whose mission

The infirm will walk\, the dead will dance\, cities will rise up from th
e earth\, and the trees themselves will rebel. Walls will crawl and head
s will roll&hellip\;and then rejoin their host bodies. Anything can happ
en in a cartoon\, and this exhilarating collection of short animated fil
ms from all over the world displays all that can be done with the form.
Independent animators have all the freedom that a filmmaker could ever
hope for&mdash\;if an animator has the talent and the time\, then she c
an take any image that dances through her dreams and bring it to life. T
hese films defy expectations and bring us images that have never been se
en before--kinetic visions that defy logic yet seem to make sense to som
e dark corner of our subconscious. Before the films\, Sound Fix presen
ts Javelin . And after the films\, everyone in attendance is invited
to the Rooftop Films after party at Fontana's where we will be serving c
omplimentary Radeberger Pilsner until 1 AM and hanging out with the fi
lmmakers and the band. FILMS: Orgesticulanismus (Mathieu Labaye |
Belgium | 9:00) A tribute to his father\, who suffered from Multiple Sc
lerosis from the age of 29\, Mathieu Labaye&rsquo\;s Orgesticulanismus e
xplores the very nature of human motion. Beginning with a study of rudim
entary human movement\, the film eventually explodes into a kinetic orgy
and an existential dance party starring everyone in the world. Dahli
a (Michael Langan | San Francisco | 5:00) A moving portrait of the bust
le and permanence of a city\, "Dahlia" juxtaposes the stable forms and p
atterns of life with the frenetic behavior of humanity\, set to a drivin
g score of vocal percussion. Mandrake (Andy Cahill | 4:00) A subterr
anean mineral aficionado is tantalized by a mysterious and alluring rock
  on a rope. Varmints (Marc Craste | London | 24:00) Marc Craste ( J
o Jo in the Stars \, Rooftop Films 2008) returns to the roof with this
Academy Awards short-listed and BAFTA nominated gem. Adapted from an awa
rd-winning book of the same name\, the Varmints tells the story of one s
mall creature&rsquo\;s struggle to preserve a world in danger of being l
ost forever through recklessness and indifference. Forestry (Woodpeck
er | Japan | 4:00) A tale of a man and woman tormented by the mischievo
us spirits of the woods. Hobo Clown (Allison Schulnik | California |
3:50) A masterful claymation exploration of blended colors and conflict
ing emotions. Undone (Hayley Morris | New York | 6:00) A drifting ma
n struggles to pull objects from the roiling sea below him and scrambles
to keep the objects from slipping through his fingers. A stop-motion an
imation using textured and tactile materials\, as well as personal image
ry\, that represents the progression of the Alzheimer&rsquo\;s disease i
n a poetic and visual way. Kodomo No Keijijogaku (A Children&rsquo\;s
Metaphysics) (Koji Yamamura | Japan | 5:00) Ecology and philosophy of
children with sadness and humor. Western Spaghetti (PES | New York |
2:00) Everyday objects become delicious ingredients as we learn how to
cook spaghetti through stop-motion photography. Muto (Blu | Brazil |
6:00) A painstakingly crafted masterpiece created from thousands of pie
ces of graffiti art drawn upon the walls of Buenos Aires. www.blublu.org
/ Naiade (Nadia Micault and Lorenzo Nanni | France | 12:00) Ava rule
s over on a swamp filled with fantastical creatures and animated fauna.
But a strange boy secretly observes her flourishing kingdom and believes
that perhaps she can help him to save the life of his sick twin brother
&hellip\; The Royal Nightmare (Alex Budovsky | New York | 3:30) This
animated short tells a story of an Evil King whose life is turned into
a nightmare by a troublesome pilgrim who constantly reappears by the Roy
al Tower and totally ignores The King&hellip\;and the basic rules of phy

\n \n Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance. \n Director Z
ach Levy\, creator of the world famous “Bush Cards\,” will be in attenda
 nce for a Q & A. \n \n “An amazing debut...equally funny and tragi
c while breaking new ground in its approach. Levy’s work is akin to Sale
sman and Grey Gardens\, with a true respect and admiration not only for
his subject\, but for the documentary form.” \n —Ross Kauffman\, Aca
demy Award winning director of Born Into Brothels \n \n “There cou
ld not be a more brilliant metaphor for the punishing quest to achieve t
he American Dream than watching Stan hunched over\, gritting his teeth a
nd grunting as he tries to bend a penny with his own bare hands.” \n
—Michael Tully\, Hammer To Nail \n \n\n\nStrongman (Zachary Levy |
 New York\, NY | www.strongmanfilm.com | 113 min.) \nStrongman is a deep
ly personal portrait of Stanless Steel\, “the Strongest Man in the World
at Bending Steel and Metal.” Told with the kind of intimacy that can on
ly be achieved with years of filming\, Strongman follows the life\, drea
ms and heartbreaking humanity of Stanless Steel as he struggles to gain
control of a world that seems constantly out of the grasp of his powerfu
l hands. Strongman is a film about believing in yourself\, and never giv
ing up. It is a film about weakness and a film about strength. \n \nSal
vaging and selling scrap metal in New York and New Jersey by day forces
Stan to hone his skills at night. He struggles to find the time to train
\, and crafts his own specific\, rigorous training exercises\, such as l
ifting a heavy mallet with his wrist\, or carrying elevator weights long
distances. His creativity with his training indicates the uniqueness of
his skills and the depth of his commitment\, while highlighting the dif
ficulty of his quest to achieve recognition. \n \n \nStan believes these
feats are not just acts of physical strength—but of deep emotional and
spiritual strength. Through scenes of tender (and often comic) communica
tion with his struggling family—his questioning mother\, his troubled br
other\, and his loving but perturbed girlfriend—we see Stan attempting t
o express the nature and depth of his commitment\, perhaps forging a pat
h for others to follow. Among his family\, Stan alone seems to have a fo
cus\, a dream. His stunts are demonstrations of the kind of life transfo
rmation possible when you put your whole belief system into something. B
ut belief that fervent can bring with it equally biting disappointment.
\n \nStan refuses to craft simple\, flamboyant tricks\, which makes it
hard for him to achieve widespread acclaim. A parking lot truck lift is
a success\, but the crowd is limited. An appearance on British televisio
n seems like a boon\, but within the exposure Stan painfully realizes th
e inequity between him and the fakers and showmen. His commitment to his
girlfriend Barbara as a personal MC indicates Stan’s unfailing loyalty\
, and his desire to elevate both of their lives\, but the relationship s
trains under the pressure of Stan’s growing frustration. \n \nJust as S
tan cares less about superficial showmanship than he does about performi
ng a veritable feat\, director Zachary Levy’s filmmaking style follows s
uit\, crafting a portrait that through honesty and integrity discovers t
rue depth and significance. Because the real test of Stan’s strength is
not in his hands\, it’s in his soul. \n \n Rooftop Films is a non-prof
it organization whose mission is to engage and inspire the diverse commu
nities of New York City by showcasing the work of emerging filmmakers an
d musicians. In addition to our Summer Series &ndash\; which takes place

   \n \n \n\n\n\n\n Stingray Sam (Cory McAbee | Brooklyn\, NY |
 www.stingraysam.com | 70 min.) \nStringray Sam tells a story of the fu
ture\, based on themes of modern society\, with an old-fashioned sensibi
lity borrowing on the traditions of sci-fi\, westerns\, singing cowboy s
erials and musicals of classic American film. Beautifully combining live
action\, graphic collages\, illustrations\, photo montages and animatio
n\, you’ll never see anything else quite like Stingray Sam. Watch a trai
ler at http://stingraysam.com/trailer.html\n\n \n \nStingray Sam is no
t a hero. Like all great heroes\, he comes to his quest reluctantly. Sam
is satisfied singing away in a dejected bar on now desolate Mars (locat
ions which might seem eerily familiar to Williamsburg residents). The ga
lactic version of globalization (universalization?) wrought industrial h
avoc on Sam’s home planet\, forcing him into a life of crime and croonin
 g. But as an ex-convict\, Sam still has a debt to pay to this unjust soc
iety. So when the Quasar Kid sidles into the saloon looking for a singin
g sidekick (and copious handfuls of cocktail olives)\, it only takes a q
uick flick of the asking stick to convince Sam to join in. Their mission
 : save the universe’s last little girl.\n \nAlong the way\, Stingray Sa
m and the Quasar Kid battle the boredom of bureaucracy at the Inter-Gala
ctic Hall of Records and Trivia\, struggle with the silliness of science
at The Pregnant Man’s Institute\, and entertain the insufferable wit of
a wealthy twit\, Fredward\, the genetically malfunctional offspring of
pioneer clone doctors Fredrick and Edward. Each encounter takes us deepe
r into the history of an outer space facing many of our current Earthly
crises\, from economic inequality to increasing prison populations\, fro
m temporary celebrity to disturbing trends in corporate mascots. Geo-pol
itical metaphors have never been this rambunctious and hilarious. \n \n
In the mode of classic Hollywood serials\, each of the six episodes foll
ows a similar pattern\, with narrative sequences in stark and stunning b
lack and white\, a color-tinted animated educational sequence (narrated
by David Hyde Pierce)\, a catchy song from McAbee’s garage-country band
The American Astronaut\, and a cliff-hanger ending. Will Stingray Sam an
d The Quasar Kid rescue the little girl? How will they handle this wild
little charge? Will the little girl’s return restore balance to the univ
erse\, or will it simply leave our hero lonely and lost? The answers are
fun and funny\, clever and creative. And at heart\, this outrageous and
innovative sci-fi western musical allegory is the simple story of man f
orced by fate into a grand crusade.\n \nStingray Sam is not a hero. But
he does do the things that folks don't do that need to be done. \n \n

\n MAP | SOUND FIX \n \nThe first film by Lev Yilmaz to screen a
 t Rooftop Films was Richard&rsquo\;s Cash Register\, way back in 2004. W
e were hooked immediately\, and hardly a year has passed since that we h
aven&rsquo\;t shown at least one of his films. Given that\, this Rooftop
retrospective of Lev&rsquo\;s painfully intimate yet universally hilari
ous work is long overdue. \n \nLev began the ultra low-budget comic/ani
mation series "Tales Of Mere Existence" in 2003\, based on gleefully emb
arrassing thoughts and stories from his own life. He self published 3 Co
mic/Animation sets and had already gathered a substantial cult audience
when his YouTube channel exploded in 2007\, and has accumulated 11.5 mil
lion video views as of May 2009. His first graphic novel\, "Sunny Side D
 own\," was published by Simon &amp\; Schuster in 2009. \n \nOur &ldquo\
;Tales of Mere Existence&rdquo\; program includes 13 very short works by
Lev\, as well as a live performance by the filmmaker. We will also be s
creening 6 additional works by other filmmakers who also divine that hum
or and insight hidden deep within the tangled strands of their lives. \n

with global implications. This engaging and personal documentary follow
s Colin Beavan for a year as he pledges to eat only locally-grown food\
, use only self-mechanized transportation\, buy no new products\, even
go without electricity . . . and bring his wife and daughter along for
the ride. The inspirational (and controversial) No Impact Man (and fami
ly) have challenged themselves to make no environmental impact for one
year. Rooftop and The Fledgling Fund invite you to join the challenge by
making similar pledges between the time of this screening and the time
of the film and book&rsquo\;s release in September. \n \n Most eve
ryone agrees that changes need to be made to save the environment. But m
ost people also think that someone else should be making those changes.
People make the easy choices&mdash\;drop their recyclable plastics in
the proper bin\, buy an organic piece of fruit when it&rsquo\;s conveni
ent. But how many among us are willing to make real changes in our live
s? How hard would these changes be? How much will they change our lifes
tyles? Are these adaptations actually helpful? And is it possible that
they could not only improve the environment\, but our level of happines
s as well?\n Colin Beavan\, a writer living in Manhattan with his wife
and daughter\, decided to find out. \n For one year\, Beavan would b
ecome &ldquo\;No Impact Man\,&rdquo\; attempting to live his normal lif
e\, in New York City\, but without leaving an impact on the environment.
No new products. No chemicals. No non-local food. No electricity. He s
acrificed his personal comfort\, risked his self-esteem\, and even jeop
ardized his relationship with his family\, all for this strange test. \
 n \nThe challenge is\, of course\, rather quixotic. Couldn&rsquo\;t Be
avan simply reduce\, reuse\, recycle\, like so many of us (try to) do?
But his obsessiveness generates immediate\, widespread attention for th
e project&mdash\;for better and worse. While the acclaim raises awarene
ss for the waste and excess in American culture\, Beavan has also place
d himself under a very public microscope\, and the detractors range fro
m dismissive major media outlets to mean-spirited personal attacks. Und
er pressure\, Beavan is forced to re-examine No Impact Man\, to question
this idea that&rsquo\;s the driving force in his life\, but will he re
nounce it? \n \nThe public scrutiny provides the intellectual spark fo
r the film\, but the tension between Colin and his wife Michelle Conlin
is the emotional core of the movie. Conlin lives like so many of us: p
roudly eating takeout\, compulsively buying the latest products\, takin
g for granted the excessive habits of consumerism. Sneaking an espresso
here and there seems a minor offense\, but the guilt from Colin is bur
densome. I&rsquo\;m sure many of us think we could handle a year without
chemical laundry detergent or new handbags\, but what about a fly-infe
sted compost bin in the kitchen\, or a pot-within-a-pot refrigeration e
xperiment? And what of her job at Business Week magazine\, examining (a
nd in many ways promoting) the essence of the culture No Impact Man is
critiquing? \n \nThis endearing and fascinating film inspires us all t
o question our roles in environmental change\, and challenges us all to
ask what we as individuals can do. Colin&rsquo\;s experiment in lifest
yle redesign is the subject of his book (scheduled for publication in S
 eptember 2009 by Farrar\, Straus &amp\; Giroux)\, No Impact Man \, and
he also maintains the provocative environmental blog\, www.noimpactman.
com. The entire No Impact Man outreach project&mdash\;including the fil
m\, the book and the blog&mdash\;are an exciting addition to the existi
ng environmental movement. Colin is using the lessons from his experime
nt and its aftermath to encourage a more sustainable lifestyle\, encour
aging people around the country to make small and large lifestyle chang
es and to participate as engaged citizens in their community.&nbsp\; \
n\n The lawn of Automotive High School will host a celebration of envir
onmentally-friendly activities\, as Rooftop Films and The Fledgling Fun

 e. The difference between New York and the rest of the world\, though\,
is that here everyone works equally hard. Some people are oppressed whil
e others have unfair advantages\, but the New York ethos is based on hus
tle\, constant struggle\, and the idea that success only comes to those
who fight for it. \n \nThis program shows that in New York even royalty
can't just cruise through life on charm ("Bronx Princess")\, and that e
ven a Holocaust-surviving immigrant ("Lessons from a Tailor") who claws
his way to the top will lend a helping hand to others following his path
 . It's a rough city\, but there is opportunity\, community\, and love. I
f you're gonna make it in New York\, you better be tough\, but you bette
 r have a generous heart\, too. \n\n \n FILMS: \nFILMS: \nNorth Brother (

SUMMARY:Persona Non Grata
DESCRIPTION:Prosecuted as a rebel. Banned as a priest. Committed as an ar
tist. Loved as a father. An inspiring documentary—co-funded by Rooftop F
 ilms - about the filmmaker’s father\, Franz Wuytack\, a radical left-win
g Belgian missionary in the slums of Venezuela in the 1960s. With a new
liberal movement sweeping Latin America\, and people like Wuytack needin
g to continue the fight for social justice in the US and around the worl
d\, this film is crucially relevant today. \n\nWuytack was a hands-on
activist\, gathering scrap lumber by himself to build housing for the ho
meless\, frolicking with hundreds of impoverished children in the founta
ins of wealthy Caracas to protest the lack of clean water for the poor.
You can see in his face and hear in his voice the deeply personal connec
tions to the people he was fighting for. And all these years later\, hea
ring the stories from the people who lived them\, the connections he for
ged come alive\, there to excite and incite us. \n \nBut Wuytack’s very
public tactics ran afoul of the conservative church\, causing a rift th
at stung him deeply\, but didn’t dampen his passion for activism. Storie
s of being hounded by the police\, and hidden like a fugitive\, play out
with the energy of an action film. Eventually Wuytack was exiled—twice—
and returning to Belgium to become an internationally acclaimed politica
lly-minded sculptor. Now with the new left-wing movement led by Hugo Cha
vez\, Wuytack is finally allowed to return to Venezuela for a revelatory
solo art show and a joyous homecoming. \n \nPart of Rooftop Films and
 XO Projects’ INDUSTRIANCE Series: films\, discussions\, installations a
nd more about the changing landscape in industry\, architecture\, agricu
lture\, labor and related fields\, and the way these changes affect indi
viduals around the world.\n \nPRIOR TO THE SCREENING: \nPANEL DISCUSSI
 ONS\, presented with Cinereach\, Shooting People & IndiePix. \n5:00-6
:00pm \n Message vs. Craft: The Art of Effective "Issue" Storytelling
\nWhen a filmmaker takes on a topic related to social justice or human
rights it is often with the hope of influencing public opinion and insp
iring action. To achieve that\, a film must reach and engage the right a
udience\, in the right numbers. It must also portray the human impact of
the issue or problem persuasively. How does a “social issue” filmmaker
balance the need to educate with the public's desire to be entertained?
How does he/she move past preaching to the choir and make a film that ca
n become a catalyst for real change? This panel will provide advice on t
he above from documentary and fiction filmmakers including\, Justin Sche
in (No Impact Man)\, Fabio Wuytack (Persona Non Grata) and Paola Mendoza
(Entre Nos)\, whose work successfully walks the issue/entertainment lin
 e. Leah Sapin of Arts Engine (which specializes in production and outrea
ch for socially relevant films)\, and New York Magazine film critic Bilg
e Ebiri will join the discussion\, to be moderated by Lina Srivastava. \
n \nPanelists include: \n Lina Srivastava (consultant to non profit
media companies working for social change) - moderator \n Justin Schei
n (Co-Director of No Impact Man ) \n Fabio Wuytack (Director of Perso
na Non Grata ) \n Bilge Ebiri (film critic from New York magazine)
\n Leah Sapin (Arts Engine) \n Paola Mendoza (Director of Entre Nos )
\n Tony Gerber (Co-Director of Full Battle Rattle ) \n\n6:30-7:30pm
\n Filmmaking Strategy: Tips\, Tools and Wisdom to Help You Make the Rig
ht Decisions For Your Film \nFilmmakers have to be both artists and st
rategists to get their films made and seen and this is the case now more
than ever as changes in funding and distribution force filmmakers to sh
oulder more of the crucial decisions on their own. This panel will help
you learn how to be the best advocate for your film by asking all the to
ugh questions that you will have to ask along the way. For example: How
much work (and what work) do you need to achieve on your own before appr
oaching a funder? And how can you tailor your pitch to communicate your
vision to a foundation vs. an equity investor? What other funding option
s are there? How do you balance traditional outreach to festivals\, sale
s agents\, broadcasters\, and distributors with the need to also create
your own fan base? Which distribution deals do you accept? How do know w
hen a deal is a good deal? How do you hope for the best but plan for the
worst? \n \n Panelists include: \n Adella Ladjevardi (Cinereach) \
n Janet Brown (Cinetic) \n Liz Ogilvie (B-Side) \n Simon Kimurry (POV)
\n Tia Lessin (Co-Director of Trouble the Water ) \n Andy Bichlbaum
(Co-Director of The Yes Men Fix the World ) \n\n7:30PM - 9:00PM: Rec
eption in courtyard including free sangria courtesy of Carlo Rossi \n

isturbing the Universe (Sarah and Emily Kunstler | New York | 1:25:00)
\nThe late civil rights attorney William Kunstler was one of the most fa
mous and controversial lawyers of the 20th century. He represented civil
rights and anti-war activists\, as well as accused terrorists and murde
rs. In the 1960s and 70s\, Kunstler fought for civil rights with Martin
Luther King Jr.\, and represented activists protesting the Vietnam war.
When the inmates took over Attica prison\, or Native Americans stood up
to the federal government at Wounded Knee\, they asked Kunstler to be th
eir lawyer. To his daughters\, it seemed that he was at the center of ev
erything important that had ever happened. But when they were growing up
\, Kunstler represented some of the most unpopular members of society: p
eople accused of rape\, terrorism\, organized crime and cop killing.\n
\nIn William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe\, filmmakers Emily and Sa
rah Kunstler explore their father's life\, from middle-class family man\
, to movement lawyer\, to the most hated lawyer in America. Weaving toge
ther home movie footage\, abundant archival footage\, and interviews wit
h countless iconic figures\, the filmmakers create an honest and compell
ing portrait of one of the most influential and perplexing figures in Am
erican legal history and try to answer fundamental questions about his l
ife.\n \nWho was William Kunstler? Why did he choose the life he did? A
nd where do his daughters fit into that choice?\n \nAn impeccably made
and deeply personal film\, featuring many of the most influential figure
 s of the last 50 years\, including Herman Badillo\, Dennis Banks\, Harry

SUMMARY:Voices From El-sayed
DESCRIPTION:Among the Bedouin people in El-Sayed\, a village in Israel\,
deafness is a way of life. For hundreds of years\, a large percentage of
the population in this tightly-knit community have been born deaf. The
people have created their own marriage customs—traditions that ensure th
e safety of all. They have developed their own unique sign language\; wh
ere else would there be one simple sign for “goat’s meat stuffed in lemo
n leaf”? A group of talkative children of El-Sayed are delighted to expr
ess that particular sign to international linguists. Elsewhere\, a set o
f brothers joke about the deficits of hearing\, and take pride in their
abilities—showing off benefits that will be obvious to the viewer (and l
istener). This potential hardship helps create a supportive\, community-
wide bond. These are a people who have reached an emotional and intellec
tual balance with a trait that most of the world sees as a disability. T
hat essential\, poetic status is captured artfully by director Oded Adom
i Leshem’s subtle use of sound and silence\, and through the people’s ch
arm and joy. So when the state of Israel presents a generous offer to th
e village—a free hearing implant for any child—many of the Bedouin are s
keptical. What need do they have for hearing? How will it change their t
raditions and disrupt their local heritage? Rumors circulate about the i
mplants not working\, of people removing them after being tormented by s
ound. But one man\, hoping for an unencumbered future for his toddler so
n\, decides to accept a cochlear implant for young Muhammad.

In Bronx Princess\, 17-year-old Rocky leaves behind her mother in New Y
ork City to reunite with her father\, a chief in Ghana. Nora is based on
true stories of the Zimbabwean dancer Nora Chipaumire\, who returns to
the landscape of her childhood and uses dance to journey through the viv
id memories of her youth. Bronx Princess (Yoni Brook &amp\; Musa Sy
eed | New York &amp\; Ghana | 38 min.) Bronx Princess follows headstr
ong 17-year-old Rocky's journey as she leaves behind her mother in New Y
ork City to reunite with her father\, a chief in Ghana\, West Africa. Fi
lmed during the tumultuous summer between high school and college\, this
funny and touching documentary tells Rocky's coming-of-age story. By co
nfronting her immigrant parents' ideas of adulthood\, Rocky reconciles h
er African heritage with her dream of independence. Bronx Princess i
s the hub of an outreach campaign to improve access to educational resou
rces for urban youth and bridge the educational divide in immigrant fami
lies. The filmmakers&rsquo\; goal is to remove the obstacles that immigr
ant and low-income youth face when seeking post-secondary education. Bro
nx Princess is an effective way of promoting dialogue within immigrant f
amilies and guiding youth toward post-secondary education. For more info

mp\; Zimbabwe | 35 min.) Nora is based on true stories of the dancer
Nora Chipaumire\, who was born in Zimbabwe in 1965 and now resides in Ne
w York. In the film\, Nora returns to the landscape of her childhood and
takes a journey through some vivid memories of her youth. Using perform
ance and dance\, she brings her history to life in a swiftly-moving poem
of sound and image. The result is a film about family dramas\, difficul
t love affairs and militant politics\, which moves back and forth betwee
n the comic and the tragic\, the joyful and the mournful. It is a film a
bout a girl who is constantly embattled&mdash\;struggling against all ki
nds of intimidation and violence&mdash\;but who slowly gathers strength\
, pride and independence. Shot entirely on location in Southern Africa\,
Nora includes a multitude of local performers and dancers of all ages\,
from young schoolchildren to ancient grandmothers\, and much of the mus
ic is specially composed by a legend of Zimbabwean music\, Thomas Mapfum
 o. "[Nora] succeeds in combining a rough personal narrative with po
etic\, allusive imagery." - New York Times "...dream-like recoll
